Are Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles Worth It in Texas?
October 12, 2026 · Sure Claim Roofing LLC · Updated

Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth it in Texas? They can be worth considering when you already need a roof replacement, the exact product has a verified impact rating, and the extra cost makes sense for your home. Confirm any insurance savings with your insurer before using them to justify the upgrade. A Class 4 label is a test classification, not a promise that the roof will survive every storm.
For homeowners in Baytown, Mont Belvieu, and the surrounding Gulf Coast area, compare the whole roofing proposal. Hail resistance, wind performance, installation, and insurance documentation are separate questions. Choosing a shingle answers only part of them.

What does Class 4 mean for roofing shingles?
UL 2218 classifies impact resistance from Class 1 through Class 4. IBHS explains that the test uses steel balls dropped onto roofing samples; Class 4 corresponds to the largest, two-inch ball in that classification. Passing depends on the sample meeting the test's damage criteria. IBHS also notes that these standardized tests evaluate new products and do not account for aging and weathering. IBHS Roof 101, undated, accessed October 12, 2026.
Ask for the manufacturer's name, exact product line, and current rating documentation in the written proposal. “Architectural,” “premium,” and “impact resistant” should not substitute for the precise product and classification. A picture of shingles or a sample's thickness cannot verify the rating.
Keep these questions separate when comparing bids:
•Impact rating: What standard and classification apply to this exact product?
•Product performance: What independent test information can we review?
•Wind requirements: Does the proposed system and installation meet the requirements for this property?
•Insurance eligibility: Does my insurer recognize this product and installation for a credit?
Why two Class 4 products may not perform equally
IBHS uses a separate hail-testing approach with laboratory-made hailstones and evaluates several damage modes. Its November 19, 2025 update compared 24 impact-resistant products. Most received Good ratings, and none received Excellent. The useful lesson is to compare the exact product rather than assume every impact-resistant shingle provides the same performance. IBHS, November 19, 2025.
Use the IBHS shingle performance ratings alongside manufacturer documentation. Check the product name and the test edition carefully. A favorable result for one product should not be treated as a rating for every shingle sold by that manufacturer.
Ask your roofer to explain the tradeoff between the proposed products in plain language. If the recommendation relies only on “this brand is better,” request the documentation behind it. If the product has not been included in a particular independent comparison, record that limitation instead of filling the gap with an assumed score.
Do Class 4 shingles qualify for a Texas insurance discount?
They may. TDI says credit amounts and accepted documentation are determined by the insurance company. Its guidance also describes impact-resistant roofing credits through TWIA and the product labeling needed for those credits. It does not establish one savings percentage for every Texas homeowner. TDI, February 24, 2023.
For a concrete carrier example, State Farm lists Texas among the states where roofing discounts are available. It tells homeowners to check with their agent before installing a roof, notes that only certain products qualify, and requires its certification form. It also lists limitations for roofs installed over existing roofing. State Farm, undated, accessed October 12, 2026.
Before signing a contract, send your agent the proposed product name and ask:
•Does this exact shingle qualify under my policy and property location?
•What would my annual premium be with this roof, compared with the otherwise identical quote?
•Which part of the premium receives the credit?
•Does receiving the credit involve any change to coverage or exclusions?
•Which installation records, forms, labels, and photos do you need?
•When would the credit begin, and how can I confirm it was applied?
Use the insurer's dollar comparison in your decision. A contractor's general percentage or a neighbor's discount is not a quote for your policy. Keep the written response with the roofing proposal.
If the insurer also raises your existing roof's age, our Texas roof-age insurance guide separates policy renewal, physical condition, and claim-payment terms. A possible discount on a new product does not resolve those questions.
How to compare the upgrade cost without guessing at savings
Ask for two written options for the same roof: the baseline shingle and the proposed Class 4 product. The tear-off, decking allowances, flashing, ventilation work, cleanup, and other scope should be comparable. Otherwise, the difference between the totals may include more than the material upgrade.
Then use this simple worksheet:
•Incremental upgrade cost: Class 4 proposal total minus the comparable baseline proposal total.
•Confirmed annual savings: Baseline annual premium minus the insurer's quoted annual premium with the proposed roof.
•Simple savings-only payback: Incremental upgrade cost divided by confirmed annual savings.
•Ownership horizon: How long you expect to keep the home, compared with that calculated period.
This calculation is a comparison tool, not a forecast. It assumes the quoted annual savings continue and leaves out financing costs, future premium changes, storm damage, and resale value. If the insurer has not confirmed savings, mark them unknown. If the difference is zero, insurance savings do not repay the upgrade.
You can still consider the product for its documented performance. Keep that reason separate from the insurance calculation so the decision remains understandable if your policy changes later. Our Baytown roof replacement cost guide explains the scope questions that affect a full replacement quote.

Which paperwork should you keep after installation?
TDI's PC068 Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation Form records roofing-company, property, manufacturer, product, and installation information. It says homeowners should keep the original and send a copy to their insurance company. The form also explains that it is not a warranty. PC068 form, revision April 2023, accessed October 12, 2026.
Ask your insurer which form it accepts before work begins. TDI notes that private insurers may use PC068 or require their own form. For TWIA, TDI describes PC068 as required for its impact-resistant credit. TDI, February 24, 2023.
Build a small completion file with the contract, exact product information, installation date, invoice, warranties, required insurance form, and the product label documentation requested by the insurer. After submitting it, ask for confirmation that the credit was applied and retain the revised policy or premium record.
In Baytown, Class 4 does not replace windstorm checks
An impact-resistance label and a windstorm certificate serve different purposes. TWIA explains that roof replacement or significant roof repair may require windstorm certification for eligibility, subject to its requirements and exceptions. Its certificate guidance describes WPI-8 for new or ongoing improvements and WPI-8-E for completed improvements. TWIA, undated, accessed October 12, 2026.
Before work begins, ask who will check the property-specific permit and windstorm requirements, coordinate any required inspection, and deliver the completion records. Do not treat an impact-resistant roofing form as a substitute for a required windstorm certificate.
Our roof replacement permit and windstorm guidance explains the checks to discuss for local work. Ask about the roofing system's wind performance and installation requirements separately from its hail-impact classification.
When does the Class 4 upgrade deserve a closer look?
Consider it during an already-needed replacement when you can compare the incremental cost, exact-product documentation, and confirmed insurance terms. That gives you a defined decision instead of a broad promise that a premium roof will “pay for itself.”
Pause the financial argument if savings are unconfirmed, the proposals include different work, or the quoted payback extends beyond your expected ownership. Request the missing information before committing.
Start with the roof's condition if you are unsure whether replacement is needed at all. An upgrade discussion should not turn a repairable issue into an assumed whole-roof replacement. See our roof inspections and roof repair services for that first assessment.
Questions Texas homeowners ask
Are Class 4 shingles hailproof? No. A classification describes performance under a defined test. It does not promise that every installed roof will avoid damage in every storm.
Does a Class 4 label guarantee cheaper insurance? No. Confirm the qualifying product, installation, documentation, and actual premium difference with your insurer.
Are Class 4 shingles automatically hurricane rated? An impact classification does not establish the wind performance of a roofing system. Discuss wind requirements and installation separately.
Will a hail claim pay for the upgrade? Ask your insurer whether the policy covers the proposed upgrade or whether you would pay the difference. A product rating does not determine coverage. Our roofing insurance claim assistance guide explains the contractor's role.
