5 Signs Your Roof Has Hail Damage
May 2025 · Sure Claim Roofing LLC
After a hail storm hits Baytown or the surrounding East Texas area, your roof may be significantly damaged, even if it looks perfectly fine from the street. Hail damage is often subtle and requires a trained eye to identify. Here are the five key signs to look for.
1. Bruised or Dented Shingles
On asphalt shingles, hail impact leaves circular "bruises": soft spots where the granules have been knocked loose and the mat beneath has been compressed. Run your hand across the shingle (with gloves on). Bruised spots will feel soft, like a bruised apple.
2. Missing Granules
Asphalt shingles have a granule coating that protects the underlying mat from UV and weather. After a hail storm, you'll often find granules collecting in your gutters and downspout drain areas. Accelerated granule loss shortens your roof's lifespan dramatically.
3. Dented Gutters, Downspouts, and Vents
Hail leaves obvious dents on soft metal surfaces: gutters, downspouts, roof vents, and HVAC equipment on the roof. These are often the easiest indicators of a hail event serious enough to damage your shingles.
4. Cracked or Split Shingles
On older shingles (or after a particularly severe hail event), the impact can cause visible cracking. Cracked shingles allow water infiltration, leading to leaks and deck rot if not addressed quickly.
5. Interior Water Stains or Leaks
Water staining on your ceiling or attic insulation is a sign that your roof has been compromised. While not always hail-specific, it's a reliable indicator that something needs to be addressed urgently.
